Purpose: Responsible for the gross examination and quality sectioning of all pathology specimen types resulting in proper diagnosis for patient care. The Pathologist Assistant will also provide oversight and direction to grossing technicians in the gross room.
Education and Experience Requirements:
· Master’s Degree in a pathologists’ assistant program that is NAACLS accredited.
· Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in surgical autopsy or related field.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Performs dissection, description and histological sampling of all pathology specimen types.
2. Obtains and review the patient’s chart and other clinical data to assist with gross examination.
3. Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning, pertinent clinical information and studies.
4. Photographs all pertinent gross specimen.
5. Creates manifest and requisitions required for tissue processing.
6. Oversee the execution of policies and procedures, while mentoring grossing technicians that assist in the gross room.
7. Performs frozen sections and other intra-operative procedures as needed.
8. Understands and ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies.
9. Implements best practices and enforces general laboratory policies.
10. Maintains and Models REACH values (Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Compassion, Honor)
11. Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance
12. Performs other duties as required

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
· Gross anatomic knowledge necessary to properly assess all specimen types.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Able to use dictation software along with Laboratory Information System (LIS) to produce gross reports.
License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
· New York State Pathologists’ Assistant license or is eligible for a New York Pathologists’ Assistant license.
· ASCP Pathologist’ Assistant certification.

Physical Effort: Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force
